Grizzlies fend off Bulldogs in BCHL tuneup

The Victoria Grizzlies rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 5-4 in B.C. Hockey League preseason play in Port Alberni on Friday night.

Ryan Nolan, Alex Newhook, Carter Berger, Ethan Nother and T.J. Friedmann scored goals for Victoria and Zack Rose played the entire game in goal for the Grizzlies, facing 27 shots. Ryan Steele, with a pair, Julian Benner and Bradley Ong replied for the Bulldogs.

The Grizzlies will play host to the Nanaimo Clippers tonight at 7 at Juan de Fuca Arena before wrapping up the preseason on Sunday at 2 p.m. at SEAPARC Arena in Sooke, with tickets available at the door or at Shoppers Drug Mart in Sooke.

Victoria opens the regular season on Sept. 8 when they travel to Powell River to take on the Kings.

Earlier Friday, the Bulldogs announced the acquisition of defenceman Mitchell Oliver from the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in return for forward Lucas Thorne.

Oliver, of Kelowna, split last season between the Vernon Vipers and Pontiacs, scoring 11 times and adding 22 assists in 58 regular-season games between the two. He added four points in nine playoff games in Bonnyville.

Meanwhile, the Clippers defeated Cowichan Valley 3-1 on Friday to improve to 4-0 in exhibition play.
