Alex Newhook Delivers Again: Grizzlies Alumnus Sends Canadiens To Eastern Conference Final

Former Victoria Grizzlies standout Alex Newhook has once again delivered in the biggest moments on hockey’s biggest stage.

On Monday night, Newhook scored the overtime winner in Game 7 to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres and send Montreal to the Eastern Conference Final. Newhook buried the series-clinching goal 11:22 into overtime, touching off a celebration that Canadiens fans will remember for years.

The moment added another chapter to what is becoming an incredible playoff run for the former Grizzly. Earlier this postseason, Newhook also scored the Game 7 winning goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Montreal’s opening-round series victory.

Coming through once in a deciding Game 7 is memorable. Doing it twice in the same playoff run is something few players ever experience.

Newhook spent two seasons with the Victoria Grizzlies before moving on to establish himself as one of the game’s top young talents. Since leaving Victoria, he has gone on to capture a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, and now continues adding to an already impressive NHL résumé with Montreal.

For everyone in Bear Country, moments like these are reminders of what makes junior hockey special. Fans watch players grow as teenagers, chase their dreams, and eventually perform on hockey’s biggest stage.

And right now, one of the Grizzlies own is proving to be built for the biggest moments.
