Victoria, BC ~ The Grizzlies have acquired 06 goaltender Spencer Michnik from the Vernon Vipers in exchange for future considerations.
Local fans may recognize his name from his time with the WHL’s Victoria Royals last season. Michnik appeared in a dozen games with the Royals last season before joining Sherwood Park in the BCHL to finish last season. In total, Michnik appeared in 35 WHL contests between the Royals and the Seattle Thunderbirds over parts of 3 seasons.
The move to acquire Michnik was necessary after the club learned that rookie goaltender Paolo Frasca had chosen to leave the Grizzlies for the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves. The Toronto native was excelling with the Grizzlies with a record of 6-4-0-0 with a 2.27 GAA and a .939 save %.
“We’re disappointed that Paolo wanted to return to Ontario. We felt that he was on track to realize his goal of earning an NCAA scholarship with us. Organizationally, we wish him and his family nothing but the best back home,” said Grizzlies Head Coach and General Manager Geoff Grimwood.
As the saying goes, when one door closes, another opens. The Grizzlies hope Michnik can thrive during his 2nd stint in Victoria. “He’s a 19-year-old goaltender who brings a bunch of experience with him. Based on all the conversations we had with people around the game, he’s a great teammate and will give us a chance to win,” said Grimwood.
The Grizzlies hit the road for a pair of Coastal Conference matchups this weekend. On Friday, they head to Chilliwack to take on the Chiefs, and on Saturday, they face the Langley Rivermen. The Grizzlies return home next weekend to face the Powell River on Saturday, and on Sunday, November 30th, it’s the Grizzlies annual Teddy Bear Toss at 2:00 pm.
