Game-day Preview: Regular Season Game 1 Victoria Grizzlies at Powell River Kings

Powell River, BC ~ The Victoria Grizzlies get set to open their regular season from the Sunshine Coast in Powell River tonight at 7:00 PM.

Victoria is looking to build off their strong 2023-24 campaign which saw them bow out in the second round in six games to the eventual champion; Surrey Eagles. Many of the forwards from that 2023-24 team are returning including; Jacksenn Hungle, Julian Cull, Ryan Watt, Chase Pirtle, Landon Mackie, Reegan Hiscock, Malcolm Green and Tobias Pitka however just one returning defenseman will be in the Grizzlies lineup tonight.

The back end has been an area of interest throughout training camp and exhibition with very promising young players gracing the Grizzlies pivot positions. Victoria however decided to deepen their defence this week by trading for Brady Smith (a 19 year old Connecticut commit) from the Trail Smoke Eaters and by signing 2023-24 Swedish U20 league defenseman goal leader; Oscar Pantzare. Both will be in the lineup this evening.

Back in goal for the Grizzlies is fan favourite and franchise staple; Oliver Auyeung-Ashton who is commited to play at Colgate University.

The Grizzlies had a strong year last season against the Powell River Kings, beating them in five out of their seven meetings, including going 2-1 from the Hap Parker Arena. Reegan Hiscock has been a force when playing in Powell RIver, recording 4 goals and 7 points in 7 career games from the Hap.

The Kings are coming off a tough season which saw them record their lowest point total in franchise history and miss the playoffs for the second time in three years. They look to bounce back with a solid group of new recruits and returnees such as; Christian Maro, Jaxon Fuder and Thomas Belzil.

Victoria defeated the Powell River Kings in pre season hockey on Sunday this past week from the Q Centre 5-4.

Listen live with the voice of the Grizzlies Tom Wilke here at 6:45 for the pre game show.
