Game Seven Preview: Grizzlies at Capitals Coastal West Semi-Final

Duncan, BC ~ The Victoria Grizzlies and Cowichan Valley Capitals get set to play a winner-takes-all game seven series finale tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Cowichan Community Arena in Duncan.

Cowichan Valley is fresh off a dominating game six 5-1 victory on Saturday night in Victoria that not only kept their season alive but has set the stage for an incredibly high-stakes matchup to close out the series. The “underdog” Grizzlies will have their second kick at the can when it comes to trying to eliminate the Coastal Conference regular season champion Caps.

The BCHL trend is interestingly on their side, as first overall West Kelowna has been eliminated in five games by Cranbrook, Sherwood Park kicked out the powerhouse Blackfalds Bulldogs last night, and the Coastal East Division winning Prince George Spruce Kings have been pushed to game seven by the Langley Rivermen. One could say that it has been a postseason of surprises.

Offense will have to be something that comes to life tonight for Victoria, who have managed just 13 goals in the series. They scored four in game three at home, but have mustered just three in the last two games. A day off yesterday will certainly do them well, as they definitely looked the more fatigued squad on Saturday after their second overtime victory the night prior. A day to recoup and reset, coupled with the motivation of keeping the season alive, should be more than enough to make tonight’s contest one to remember for both sides.

The Grizzlies will need to find a way to stop Jack McAra, who leads all skaters in the series with 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists). He is coming off a First-Star four-point performance in game six and has had his fingerprints all over the Capitals’ three wins in the series.

On the other end of the ice, Victoria must get their top line going. Leading scorer Artur Gross is yet to score in the postseason, while Maddux Martin has just one. Owen Warnick scored in games three and four, but for the most part, that “top-line trio” has been smothered. Tonight’s chances at a Grizzly victory will almost 100% ride on whether or not the Grizzlies top guns can do some damage.

Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. in Duncan with the game available to listen to free of charge on the Grizzlies Audio Streaming App on MixLR with Tom WIlke.
