Goaltending heroics help Victoria Grizzlies edge Capitals

Oliver Auyeung-Ashton’s 32-save goaltending performance backstopped the Victoria Grizzlies (8-10-3) to a 2-1 B.C. Hockey League victory over the ­Cowichan Valley Capitals (6-12-2) on ­Friday night at the Cowichan Community Centre in Duncan.

Capitals goaltender Lukas Renaud was also strong with 32 saves in being named third-star with Auyeung-Ashton first star and Grizzlies forward Jack ­Gorton second star.

Owen Bohn’s ninth goal of the season and Gorton’s fifth gave the Grizzlies the 2-1 lead in the second period. Andrew Haxton scored for Cowichan Valley in the middle period.

The Grizzlies penalty kill was key in holding the ­Capitals’ power play to 0-4 in snapping a four-game losing streak. ­

The teams meet again tonight at The Q Centre in Colwood.
