Grizzlies and Chiefs Set To Battle Again

Chilliwack, BC ~ The Victoria Grizzlies are back on the mainland this weekend, starting tonight in Chilliwack, where they fell last Friday night.

Coming into this contest, the Grizzlies are sitting in third in the Coastal West Division with a 10-9-0 record. They are 2-4-0 in their last six and trying to find some consistency in a first half of the season that has hovered around .500. On the other end of the ice, the Chilliwack Chiefs are fourth in the Coastal East at 8-9-0 through 17 games. After a 1-8-0 start, they have won seven of their last eight and are the hottest team in the BCHL.

After a huge 16-goal weekend against the Powell River Kings, this past Friday and Saturday saw the Grizzlies find the net just once in 120 minutes of action (Sam Rousseau’s 11th came less than two minutes into Friday night’s game). That will need to change as they are back at the Chilliwack Coliseum this evening, with hopes of returning to the win column.

They are going to have to do that with some new faces in between the pipes. Following last weekend, the Grizzlies announced that they had released 20-year-old goaltender Carter Capton, and then later in the week said goodbye to their other netminder, Paolo Frasca, who departed for the OHL. In a corresponding move, they acquired 19-year-old crease commander Spencer Michnik from the Vernon Vipers. Spencer had been playing in Camrose of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, too, this season, and is a former Seattle Thunderbird and Victoria Royal (WHL). All indications point to Michnik getting the nod for the Grizzlies this weekend, making for quite a way to make one’s team debut.

The Grizzlies will almost certainly have Dustin Renas circled on the Chilliwack line chart, as he netted a hat trick and added an assist last Friday in Chilliwack against them.

Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m., with the game being streamed live on FloHockey with a paid subscription or for free to listen to on the Grizzlies Audio Streaming App on Mixlr with Tom Wilke.
