Victoria, BC The Victoria Grizzlies Junior A Hockey team are launching a new school program aptly named ‘Get Moving with the Grizzlies’ which aims to motivate kids to make healthy and active lifestyle choices while encouraging them to try out new athletic pursuits and activities. Acting as role models for local youth, the Grizzlies players have a unique opportunity to inspire and impact young lives in a positive way.

The Grizzlies team recently visited the Evergreen Independent School in Mill Bay for a trial run and are now planning to visit every middle and elementary school in the Sooke, Saanich and Victoria districts to present this new program and challenge the students to take the Grizzlies 4 Week Active Living Challenge.

“With the increasing distractions of video games, social media and the Internet, leading a physically active and healthy lifestyle is the new challenge for our youth today. We want to help the youngsters in our community find fun, recreational activities that will get them off the couch and get them moving to build a healthy foundation that will continue into their adulthood,” said Grizzlies Head Coach/GM Craig Didmon.

According to the CSEP (Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology), children and teens between the ages of 5 and 17 should follow these guidelines every 24 hour period:

  • Sweat – 60 minutes of heart-pumping physical activity
  • Step – several hours of light physical activity
  • Sleep – 9-11 hours of sleep per night for children aged 5-13 years, and 8-10 hours for those aged 14-17 years
  • Sit – no more than two hours of recreational screen time and limited sitting for extended periods

Kalyan Studios,  Back to Back Chiropractic and the Braefoot Community Association have partnered with the Victoria Grizzlies to create an informative video presentation that shows the hockey stars trying out some non-hockey athletic activities along with player interviews where they offer advice for young children and insight into their own inspiration and role models growing up. The Grizzlies players will also teach the students how to make a fun fitness obstacle course they can build at home with everyday items.

The students will also be given a handout with ideas and tips for fun activities they can do on their own or with friends and family, instructions for the Grizzlies 4 Week Active Living Challenge and an entry form that the students can fill out to enter to win prizes from like minded and fitness oriented sponsors.
