Alex Newhook is alive and well. Just ask his Island Division opponents.
After not getting a goal and having just four assists in his first four B.C. Hockey League games, the Victoria Grizzlies captain has racked up six points in his last three games, all Grizzlies wins, including a goal and an assist on Friday night at The Q Centre to lead Victoria to a 3-2 win over the Powell River Kings.
Newhook, committed to Boston College of the NCAA for the fall of 2019 and projected to be a first-round pick in next summer’s NHL draft in Vancouver, found himself with a new winger on Friday as rookie Eddie Yan stepped up to the top line along with New York Rangers draft pick Riley Hughes. And it didn’t take Yan long to reap the benefits, as he buried a Newhook feed on a two-on-one eight minutes into the first period to put the Grizzlies up 1-0.
Lach Hadley made it 2-0 late in the opening period. And then Newhook buried his third of the season midway through the second period.
The Grizzlies were in penalty trouble all night and the Kings got a Ben Berard goal late in the second on a two-man advantage to get some life. Berard then struck again late in the third just as the power play ended.
Victoria was 0-for-1 on the power play, while Powell River was 1-for-7.
While Newhook was leading the Grizzlies’ attack, veteran Kurtis Chapman stood tall in the Victoria net. The 20-year-old from Airdrie, Alta., made 41 saves to pick up his third straight win. Mitch Adamyk made 23 saves in taking the loss for the Kings.
The Grizzlies get today off before welcoming the Chilliwack Chiefs to The Q Centre on Sunday at 2 p.m.
