The Powell River Kings defeated the Victoria Grizzlies 8-3 Wednesday at the Bauer B.C. Hockey League Showcase Festival.

The festival, one-stop shopping for U.S. collegiate NCAA and National Hockey League scouts, takes place in two waves. The Coastal Conference teams are playing Wednesday and today at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. Interior Conference teams will play Friday and Saturday at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton. The games count in the standings as the Grizzlies fell to 3-6, while the Kings moved to 7-3. Powell River got off to a fast start, outshooting Victoria 16-3 and taking a 2-0 lead into the first break.

Michael Abgrall scored a hat trick for Powell River. The Grizzlies goals came from Darwin Lakoduk, Henri Schreifels and Eddie Yan.

Victoria starting goaltender Joe Howe was touched for six goals on 28 shots and replacement Blake Wood for two goals on 10 shots. Kings starter Matteo Paler-Chow made 17 saves on 20 Victoria shots, while Eli Pulver mopped up by blocking both shots he faced.

The Nanaimo Clippers (4-3-1), who beat the Surrey Eagles 6-2 on Wednesday at the Showcase, meet the Grizzlies this morning at 10 a.m. in Chilliwack.
