Powell River, BC ~ Max Silver muscled a goal home at 1:37 of overtime on Saturday night at the Hap Parker Arena in Powell River to give the Grizzlies a well deserved 1-0 victory over the Powell River Kings.
Victoria pushed all game but couldn’t seem to solve Powell River netminder David Skacel who stood on his head for 61 minutes stopping all but one of the 52 shots he faced. The Grizzlies found themselves hemming the Kings in their own zone for minutes at a time, but the Czechian born goaltender had other ideas.
The Grizzlies couldn’t convert on four powerplays while the Kings also drew a blank going zero for three.
Carter Capton was splendid in the Grizzlies crease. He was the much less tested goalie and mostly saw outside shots but was rock solid when called upon. He was a perfect 34/34 on Saturday night but sadly he was not given a shutout due to Paolo Frasca getting the call in goal for just over two minutes when Capton was being medically examined. Capton would return to the crease but for technicality sake he was not given a shutout on the stat sheet.
Max Silver’s overtime goal was set up by Levi Eiter who drove the goal from the outside and used good pace to beat a defenseman wide. Silver was there at the backdoor to force the puck home and bring the Grizzlies players flying over the bench in celebration. Carter Hynes picked up the secondary assist, giving the defenseman three points through the first three games.
Victoria is now 2-1-0 on the season and are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM PST for a rematch at the Hap.
