Victoria, BC ~ The Victoria Grizzlies announced on Monday evening that they will debut their new “alternate” jerseys on Friday night for their 30th anniversary game in partnership with McCall Gardens.
The Grizzlies are proud to celebrate 30 years of Junior hockey in the city of Victoria and that means back to the team’s roots as the “Victoria Salsa” which were birthed for the 1994-95 season. With that in mind the Grizzlies will wear red Salsa jerseys for the remainder of the 2024-25 season which features the muscular pepper look that was with the team for their 2000-01 Fred page Cup victory, the only championship in the franchise’s history.
One of the most exciting reasons behind the throwback, is how the “Salsa” resonates with people in the city. At the time of their incorporation, the team was the only one in town and played out of Victoria’s original downtown Memorial Arena. That combined with the championship made for the team becoming immensely popular during the late 90s and early 2000s.
The Salsa had some notable players come through the organization including; Kyle Greentree, Jordan Sigalet, Ryan O’Byrne and Tyler Bozak. The team would rebrand in 2006 to become the Victoria Grizzlies after an ownership change. The Grizzlies wore a “Salsa” jersey once during the 60th BCHL anniversary however this will be the first time that the team has fully incorporated the old regime since the teams rebrand.
Victoria hosts the conference leading Chilliwack Chiefs on Friday night for their 30th anniversary game and debut the Salsa jerseys. Tickets are available by clicking here.
