FORMER TIMES COLONIST PUBLISHER JOINS GRIZZLIES OWNERSHIP

The Victoria Grizzlies have added yet another partner to its ownership group.

Team president John Wilson announced late Thursday afternoon that former Times Colonist publisher Bob McKenzie has joined the group, bringing with him a wealth of experience in community relations and numerous business contacts.

“Bob brings a wealth of knowledge and his media connections and business connections are abundant,” said Wilson, who approached McKenzie with the proposition. “He will be like most of the owners, working in an advisory role.

“It’s all about what we said from the get-go, getting back into the community and reattaching those ties to corporate and community citizens to give back,” added Wilson.

McKenzie is a longtime Grizzlies’ season-ticket holder and was instrumental in the success of PGA Tour Canada’s annual stop in Victoria.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of it and looking forward to working with the fellow ownership group and bringing people back to Bear Mountain Arena,” McKenzie relayed in a message through Wilson, who stated McKenzie will help drum up support of the organization’s Happy Day campaign, which is hoping to raise $50,000 to assist four-year-old cancer patient Hannah Day.

Five dollars of every ticket sold for the remainder of the season will go to the Langford child’s family to assist with costs incurred travelling for treatment to Vancouver.

The Grizzlies’ next home game is Saturday at 7:15 p.m. against Merritt.

Wilson — who recently joined the ownership group along with Pete Zubersky, Don Robinson, Reza Binab and Kirby Yeats — said he is continuously looking to add more owners to the group.
