The Victoria Grizzlies are proud to share our media resources with Mena Westhaver and her bid to raise money for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.
Here is a little info about Mena, why we are so proud of her and how you can support the cause.

Life in a house with four boys between the ages of six and 13 is bound to be a challenge, but Mena has confronted unimaginable hardship to become the true hero she is to our community. In 2007, Mena started her philanthropic career by creating The Grizzlies Cub Fund in partnership with the Victoria Grizzlies. Why? As Mena told us, she is a child sexual abuse survivor, and had recently gone through losing her brother, who was murdered in 2003. She was feeling pretty lucky to have four healthy children, jobs and a home. She approached the Victoria Grizzlies and with their support, started teaching skating lessons, donating the proceeds to a local family who had a child with a life threatening illness. At that time, she never would have never imagined that 18 months later, she would hear the words, "we have found leukemic blasts in Jack's blood." Mena knew she couldn’t help Jack medically apart from taking him to his countless hospital visits. But she could help Jack and find ways for him to feel in control of his cancer. Together as a family, they look for ways to feel stronger than cancer and to assist those faced with the challenges of having a child with a life-threatening illness. Jack is now recovering well and back in the swing of things with school and friends. Mena says that on days she feels weak, she looks at Jack and feels strong again: “He has taught us so much through this whole ordeal.”

Mena was nominated by the Victoria Hospitals Foundation – but yes don't see it as voting for me…but for kids that get sick and need medical attention… as the winner wins $100,000 to the charity of their choice… mine is the peds ward at VGH… If you are comfortable sharing this with anyone else… that would be great… all the causes are great ones. You can vote everyday until October 15th. I have a lot of catching up to do as this has been going on all summer but I was just nominated last week… THANK YOU!
