Victoria Grizzlies forward Alex Newhook has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 3, the league announced Monday.
The 18-year-old had four goals and three assists in three games this week, including a hat trick and a five-point effort on Sunday afternoon.
Newhook started his week by picking up an assist in the Grizzlies 5-2 victory over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Wednesday. On Saturday, the St. John’s, N.L. product scored his team’s first goal in Victoria’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Powell River Kings. Sunday afternoon was the shining moment of the week for Newhook as he scored three goals and added a pair of assists in a rematch with the Kings as the Grizzlies went on to win 6-2 and reclaim sole possession of first place in the Island Division. He was named the game’s first star.
With less than 10 games to go on the schedule, Newhook, a potential first round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, is starting to run away with the BCHL scoring l
ead. His 81 points are eight more than his closest competitor and his 29 goals on the year are the fourth-most in the league.
